What You Might Not Know About Car Seat Safety

A recent Journal of Pediatrics study found that 95% of parents are making at least one significant error when it comes to having their infant use a car seat. What, you might wonder, is it about using a car seat that is so difficult?

Over 75% of study participants installed the car seat incorrectly into the car. Experts recommend a two-part process for getting it right. First, follow instructions such as the ones outlined here. Second, consider getting your car seat inspected to ensure it is installed correctly. You can find a car inspection location close to you by following this link.

Other common errors included positioning the infant incorrectly in their seat (86%); putting the harness retainer clip on too low (it should be level with the armpits); twisting the car seat straps (no kinks!); and leaving the car seat at an incorrect angle. Whew! It's more complicated than it seems! However, there are some great pointers to follow at SaferCar.gov.

One simple tip from veteran parents is to get that car seat installed and checked out way before the baby's due date! That way you can rest assured that the seat (and you) will be set to transport the baby safely for his or her first ride!
