Faith of Our Fathers

Happy Father's Day! To all of the wonderful fathers out there, living and deceased—we salute you! Thank you for being strong role models for your children and stalwart examples of truth, integrity and strength. More than ever, we need your fine example and guidance so that children can grow and prosper in environments of safety and love.

Much is placed on your shoulders and we honor you as providers of food, shelter and clothing for your families. Most especially, we encourage you to continue to be the light in so many dark places in the lives of children who face dangerous challenges on their journeys—ones that are often overwhelming.

Bullying, an ever-ancient, ever-new problem in our schools and societies, wounds children to their very core. Psychological theories state that unacknowledged shame turns to violence. When children and high school students are bullied by their classmates and yes, sometimes even their teachers, they have few places to turn. Sadly and most unfortunately, some teachers and school administrators turn a blind eye to the bullying in their educational environments. This leads to disastrous effects on the lives of children.

When children and students (or any person, for that matter) feel shamed and have no place to turn to talk about the bullying that they experience, their feelings may turn to anger and even rage. We all know what can result. The tragic stories fill the news.

This Father's Day, we honor the good men in our lives. Let us be supportive of their roles to correct the wrongs they encounter and to be stronger witnesses to their Faith, which professes that no child, student, man or woman is to be bullied by cowardly, evil persons who are lost in their own webs of darkness. Saint Joseph, ultimate model for every man, bless our fathers with renewed faith and courage!
