Think Vaping Isn't That Bad?

Not since 1991 have the levels of cigarette smoking been this low—and that's great news, given what we know about the risks of smoking. However, the 2015 Youth Behavior Risk Survey reported that "While only 11% of students reported smoking cigarettes in the past 30 days, 24% of students reported using e-cigarettes." This seems to be an increasingly popular trend, especially because of the variety of flavors and  types of e-cigarettes you can purchase.

So what is the danger in using e-cigarettes? Here are a few risks worth considering as a parent or caregiver that could also be discussed with any teens in your care. E-cigarettes:

  • Are not currently regulated

  • Still contain nicotine, although in lesser amounts than cigarettes

  • In some cases contain formaldehyde

  • In 75% of cases contain diacetyl, which is linked to respiratory disease

  • Can cause lung damage

  • Are addictive

  • And (of course) a drain on finances

Some promote e-cigarettes as a less harmful habit than cigarette smoking and it is possible that this may be true. However, there are many risk factors involved-many of which we have not yet seen the full effects of.
